For two terms, children across the school have had the chance to work with theatrical costume designer, Paul Shriek. The children’s creations have included:

·        the Nursery classes designing superhero outfits for their teddy bears
·        the Reception class designing futuristic life size costumes for special occasions
·        Keystage 1 children designing spectacular shoes and themed hats
·        Keystage 2 children designing an alternative school uniform!

On the afternoon of Wednesday 16th July, 2.00p.m, a fashion show will be held to showcase our new designs. Newcastle Radio and the local press will be present to launch the event. All parents and grandparents are warmly invited to attend and enjoy the fun.

Ickydoodah Helps Students To Illustrate
The Youth Enterprise group has been trying to create a book for their business project and Welbeck students were invited over to Hirst High School spend the day with them and Ickydoodah an illustrator of children's books. Everyone involved really enjoyed the day and some drawings were produced that could be used in the forthcoming book.

EXCITED: Students enjoy looking at Ickydoodah’s work

Creating Crafts
In November Hirst High sixth formers had the pleasure of working with our students helping them to create Christmas Crafts for their fair, these activities ranged from making cards to ironing transfers on bags. The school raised over £1000 for their PTA and all the students who helped out received a certificate.

ARTISTIC: A Welbeck pupil designing drawings for Hirst's book

EDUCATIONAL: Marc Knight helps a pupil design their cards.

Hatton Gallery

Pupils in Years 2, 3 and 4 recently visited the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle University. The children took part in an exhibition about The Triumph of Emperor Maximillian.

The children studied authentic block and mono printing by Hans Burgkmair then created personalised shields and banners using traditional printing techniques.

The day ended in a modern day parade around the university campus. Lots of fun was had by all.

Further information about the exhibition at the Hatton Gallery can be found at the http://www.ncl.ac.uk/Hatton/

Wansbeck Voices

Children in Keystage 2 recently represented the school at a music and dance showcase event called ‘Wansbeck Voices’. The children were taught music, song and dance from Tudor Times by a national vocal coach and adjudicator, Marilyn Davis.  Parents and staff enjoyed the evening performance where the children even sang in latin!

  The Sage

A group of 10 children made the regional final of an Anti-Bullying Song Writing Competition. The children performed on the stage at the Sage, Gateshead.  In between rehearsals we had a grand tour of Newcastle Quayside. Look at all the key locations we visited.

Erin Richardson Hogg also won the Karl Peart Award in the primary Young hero category. This award recognised Erin for her individual efforts in countering bullying and been an exceptional citizen.  What a great ambassador for Welbeck Community First and the Ashington community. Visit the Wansbeck News Post Leader website for the local newspaper coverage and article.

We have been using puppetry to promote learning in modern foreign languages.  Jacques, the French speaking puppet has visited pupils in Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 and taught us so much about numbers, phonics  and language structure.
